Is Dental Whitening For You?

by Kim Allarie on February 1, 2010

Those of you who are contemplating Teeth Whitening have already thought about getting a home whitening kit from the department store or the grocery store. However, you don’t really know how reliable these systems are, making dental whitening the ideal choice to go with. On the other hand, due to the exorbitant costs, it will be necessary to research the procedure beforehand.

Bleaching and whitening are the two major procedures that will help to whiten your teeth in the dentist’s office. Teeth whitening is a method that simply removes discoloration from the surface of your teeth. Teeth bleaching on the other hand will bleach your teeth to a white that would not occur naturally. So dental whitening products can include special toothpastes, and teeth bleaching procedures mainly include carbide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. If you gargle hydrogen peroxide in addition to your whitening treatments, you can achieve faster results.

There are other in-office whitening treatments that employ lasers in their methods. If you choose to take this approach be sure the dentist you use is properly trained. You can have whiter teeth for almost a year with laser whitening, and it’s entirely possible to get a good price for it if you have a local dentist who is qualified to do it, but for the most part it’s exorbitantly expensive. You won’t have to pay more than $50 to get the home whitening kits that are in the department stores today, but it can cost thousands to get laser whitening done.

If you go for the laser option, the procedure consists of the dentist making a mold of your teeth. This mold is then turned into a teeth tray. The tray is filled with bleaching products and peroxide; the laser then increases the power of the mixture.

After you have had your teeth whitened you should avoid certain foods in order to help the effects remain. Stay away from coffee or tea, since these drinks will stain your teeth easily. Smoking is also bad for your teeth. Citrus peels are great for cleaning your teeth of food debris and plaque, which can otherwise make your teeth discolored as time goes on. Include strawberries and other berries in your diet and you can help to naturally keep your teeth white. When spending this much money you want the effect to last as long as possible.

Teeth whitening products and procedures have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. That’s because many people realize that a whiter smile is a relatively easy way to look younger and more attractive.
